ANSWERS TO YOUR WINTER DRIVING QUESTIONS

TIRE CHAINS

Q: Where can I locate my tire size to make sure I buy the correct tire chains?

A: Typically, the easiest way to find your vehicle's tire size is to look at the tire sidewall itself or the series of letters and numbers above the rim (e.g., 225/70R16). You can also refer to the Safety Compliance Certification Label or door jamb sticker located on the driver’s side door frame. The next option is to check your owner’s manual. Once you have determined the size, you can easily find the corresponding tire chains.

Q: How many sets of tire chains should I buy?

A: Tire chains are typically installed on the drive wheels, so how many sets of tire chains to buy depends on your vehicle’s drivetrain. For example, is your vehicle a 2-wheel drive (2WD), all-wheel drive (AWD), or 4-wheel drive (4WD)? A 2WD vehicle requires a single tire chain set, a chain for each of the two drive tires. However, the manufacturer's manual is the best source of knowledge for AWD or 4WD vehicles. Some manuals explicitly state that all four tires require chains to maintain the system's balance, while other manufacturers may allow for the use of a single pair.

WINTER WIPER BLADES & WASHER FLUID

Q: What should I consider when selecting winter wiper blades?

A: The best way is to look for winter-rated blades with a rubberized or silicone protective shell that prevents ice buildup. For example, the Trico Ice wiper blades which are designed for harsher winter conditions, or the Bosch Icons known for their performance in snow and Ice.

Q: Should I switch my windshield washer fluid

A: Yes, you should switch to a winter-rated washer fluid once the temperatures start to drop below freezing. Summer fluids are mainly designed to remove bugs and grime, but they freeze easily. Winter fluid is formulated to stay liquid in cold temperatures, and many blends include a de-icing agent. If your vehicle still has a summer fluid, try to spray it out as much as possible before refilling so the winter formula is not diluted.

MOTOR OIL FOR COLD TEMPERATURES

Q: Do I need a special type of motor oil for cold temperatures?

A: Cold weather can cause engine oil to thicken, leading to potential oil circulation issues around the engine. Check the manufacturer's recommendations. Typically, manufacturers will specify recommended oil viscosities for different temperature ranges. For example, when it is colder, you may opt for a lower viscosity oil, and when it is warmer, you may opt for a higher viscosity oil.

BLOCK HEATERS

Q: Do I need a block heater if my car starts fine in the winter?

A: Even if your vehicle starts fine in the winter, using a block heater in temperatures lower than -15°C helps the engine reach proper operating temperature faster, reducing the strain on the starter and battery, and improving the cold-start fuel efficiency.

Q: How long should I plug in my block heater before driving?

A: Most block heaters only need about two to four hours to warm the engine effectively. In mild cold conditions, two to four hours should be sufficient. In extreme cold weather, it is advisable to leave the block heater plugged in overnight or for six to eight hours.

ROAD SALT vs. ICE MELT

Q: What is the difference between regular salt and ice-melt?

A: Regular road salt typically costs less than ice melt and works by lowering the freezing point of water to approximately -7°C to –10°C. Road salt is a good option for milder winter conditions. Ice-melt products are typically a different formula with compounds that work at much lower temperatures, like –25°C or even –31°C, making ice melt a fast-working and better option for extreme cold weather.
